Life in BVI

At Prickly Pear Island, we were largely away from the charter boat crowd, who like to be closer to the entertainment centers of Bitter End Resort and Saba Rock. We spent several days at Prickly Pear, wandering the beach, snorkeling Cactus Reef, and, for me, losing at Scrabble. It was very windy (as usual on this trip) and the water was not as clear as we would have liked for snorkeling. At one time, two eagle rays passed between Karen and myself, within feet of us. These are beautiful creatures and incredibly graceful under water but they are large and gave us a bit of a start looming up through the murk. On Thursday, we moved over to Bitter End Yacht Club for a bit of civilization. Bitter End is a really upscale resort with cottages dotting the hillside and expensive restaurants below. They offer free movies in an outdoor theater every night and Pirates of the Caribbean was playing that night. So, with dinghy light in hand, we watched the flick with several other cruisers who were also starved for a movie fix. It was a great movie but we did not get back to the boat until midnight, way past our normal bedtime. The next day we went for lunch at Saba Rock. The outdoor restaurant and a few cottages are new and are literally built on a rock in the middle of a pass.

On Saturday, our friends on Safina were arriving. We had originally met them in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, had traveled with them much of the way to Florida, and had parted ways last November in Stuart, Florida. They had gone to Cuba and we had gone to the Bahamas. We stayed in touch by e-mail and were excited to get together again after all this time. The e-mail has been a great tool to keep in contact with people that we have met. So we left Bitter End to provision at Leverick Bay, then crossed back to Prickly Pear to anchor and await Safina. They arrived at about 1500 and we had a great dinner together catching up on our various travels. The next day we snorkeled Cactus Reef together, then wandered Bitter End, showing our friends the highlights of Gorda Sound.
